Gator Posse

Posted in Miniatures with tags , , on April 11, 2014 by Sean

The Gatormen for Hordes continues. I’ve done 2 full units of Gatormen Posses (1 Bokor and 4 Gators).

The Bokor is painted like the rest, with a little more emphasis on some details to characterize him from the mass. All the bones and feathers certainly help.

The other pic is of more of the Gatormen. The unit only has 2 poses, which is somewhat boring for a full unit. I kept the naturalistic color scheme, with a mixture of tans, oranges, and yellows for their underbellies.

Warmachine: Halloween Horror 3!

Posted in Miniatures with tags , , on October 28, 2013 by Sean

More spooky minies for October…

Here is a selection of my Cryx army for Warmachine. Some of these paint jobs are quite old, from the start of the game years ago.

First is the Witch Coven of Garlghast, the three warcaster sisters. They wear black armor and cloth, with the odd green and brass accoutrements matching the rest of the army. The skin is extremely pale, with just enough hint of life, to offset the black clothing. It also draws the eye when they’re mixed in with the rest of the army on the table.

Next is the Egregore, the Coven’s altar/focus/floaty spiky thing. It follows the color scheme, with more glowing green effects. I pinned it to the base on wire to give it the illusion of floating. I covered the pin with putty, and married it to a group of scream spirits (nicked from the Deathjack). I liked the idea of the mistand glowing necro-goo seeping from the Egregore spilling freed ghosts as it pooled under it.

The rest of the pics are a Necrotech, a spider-legged mad scientist type, and his creations. The Scap Thralls are simple models, but I had fun with the mix of skin tones, bone, and rusty tech. Additionally, there are some Bile Thralls. More necrotic skin tones and corroded metal, though I brightened them up a little with the hoses painted red to emphasize them.

I felt like adding an update. My current work continues, but it’s still under way. So, I raided my minis cabinet for some oldies. Here are some Trollblood Warbeasts (Axer and Impaler respectively)  I painted years ago. I got the Trollbloods starter from Hordes, and tried them out.

The trolls here are an experiment of sorts. I wanted to show their more savage and primal nature, so I tried to avoid showing as much metal as possible. Their armor is all leather and skin, with the only metal shown being studs, fasteners, and spikes. The weapons of course were metal, but otherwise, I just went for brown and tan. There are at least 6 shades of brown, ranging from dark leather for belts, tanned leather for armor, a dull burlap color for bags, and warm brown for clothing . There’s  even a specific shade for the chickens the Impaler is carrying on his belt. I kept the general Trollish blue tone to their skin, but I opted for a duller slate blue instead of the brighter color Privateer usually uses.

Someday I may get around to painting the other Impaler and the warlock from the box.

Legion of Everblight

Here is the Legion of Everblight warpack for Hordes, done for a client. It contains Lylyth, a Carniveon, and some Shredders.

The color scheme for the warbeasts is effectively a reverse of the standard scheme, but that’s what the client wanted.

Lylyth herself follows the standard scheme. More of this army later.

Retribution Dawnguard Thane

Here is Retribution of Scyrah’s Dawnguard Destor Thane, a cavalry solo for a client’s Warmachine army. More of this cool ‘club kid’ black, blue, white, and pink color scheme.

I’ve evolved my decoration methods over the course of the army, and I might return to previous painted units to spruce them up, especially with the glowing gem effects.

Retribution caster Ossyan

Posted in Miniatures with tags , on July 25, 2011 by Sean

This is Lord Arcanist Ossyan, the first caster I’ve done for my client’s Retribution of Scyrah army for Warmachine.

The model is totally covered in gems, and on first pass the black armor and pink gems looked a bit odd. The contrast was too great, and made the armor look like it had a rash…

So I aimed for a glow from the gems, following the edges of the grooves and edges of the armor. This turned out better, and gives the dark model more dynamism. More casters to come.

Retribution Solos and Units

Another batch of assorted Retribution of Scyrah solo and unit models.

The color scheme is really coming together, and the army looks good on the table.
