Among other projects, I have been working on a client’s Frostgrave warband. He themed the warband and its models around Thulsa Doom’s Cult of Set from the Conan The Barbarian movie. The models come from Dark Fable miniatures, and are as close as possible to actual Doom designs to stand in nicely.
First up is Thulsa Doom himself, wearing his full battle helm and wielding a heavy khopesh-looking sword. Again, the details are a little off to keep it IP-friendly (Doom would be wearing shoes I think!) but he bears the right look. His color scheme was rather monochromatic, the only color difference being his warm dark skin contrasting with the silver and black.
Next is a Priestess of the Cult, modeled after Princess Yasmina (the princess kidnapped/seduced to the cult whom Conan is hired to return). I followed the colors of the cult members from the movie, with a brighter red for the hood. I figured compared to Doom she might be flashier. Her colors repeat in the snake wrapped around her arm.
Doom’s warband includes a pair of pets, his giant snakes. One was modeled as a cobra, so I used a King Cobra’s coloring for him, while the other is some sort of viper, so I used a Pit Viper for the colors. These are big resin 28mm casts from Artisans Guild.
Last up are a pair of Cult Soldiers. These are modified into archers, as the warband already had members with sword and axe and shield, but needed some range. For the left warrior with the silver mask, I chopped his right hand weapon and added a plastic bow to the left. The right warrior used his standard sword arm, but I swapped his left hand to one carrying a bow. The final detail was the addition of a quiver full of arrows for each. They were both based off the existing models from the warband, their colors also based off the movie.
If you’re going to have Thulsa Doom, then of course you need Conan! We have Conan and his fellow thieves, Valeria and Subotai, all done up in their night camouflage for the raid on Doom’s pleasure palace. I used copious photo references to match the black striping and clothing for the members. These were an interesting study in a minimal color scheme, with black, skin tone, and shades of brown being the only real colors. A little metal (each bearing a sword) and some assorted white metal and gold details add a little bit of life. Valeria’s blonde hair at least makes her stand out.
These might be used in the Frostgrave warband at some point, but they were fun at least.
