Mythos: Wyldborne

I’ve finished another faction starter for Mythos. This time it’s the Wyldborne, the protean nature-worshipers. All the faction models are grisly, with mutation, mutilation, and a general feeling of filth.

First up is the group shot of all the models. I went with a theme of earthy brown, contrasted by pale skin and gore. Their bases were rough broken ground somewhat overgrown with dying grass or moss.

The first member is Dorothy Good and her giant snake Blood. I kept her skin ashen pale so she would stand out from her snake. Her clothes other than her white top favor dark colors. I liked the visual idea of her emerging from the coils as if she was sprouting from the ground. She holds aloft a bundle of intestines, a sacrifice or fortune telling (?). The various shades of red really contrast with the rest of the more naturalistic color scheme.

The snake was painted to resemble a pit viper of some sort. The diamond patterns running along its back got a little too washed out, oh well.

Next is Loren, a centaur-faun creature. Aside from her dark furred body, the other weird feature is the maw in her belly. The eyes sprouting from her hips are almost an afterthought. Her skin was based with GW Xereus Purple to give her an unhealthy bruised look underlying her skin tone.

Mercy Good is the other human member of the starter. She wears a wonderful mix of browns and greys, in the form of leather clothes, her dress, wrappings, and pouches. The dead fox she holds was made a deep grey to sort of push it back visually. This way the gore stands out more.

The other snake, the Nadrageel, was based on a Timber Rattlesnake. The dark scales provide a nice canvas for the numerous scars and ritual marks.

Finally we get to this big guy, Sernos. This huge undead (?) horror looks like the game’s version of a wendigo or skinwalker. It’s a mutated thing covered in extra eyes and sprouting random horns. The flesh was kept dark, with black mated fur. The many wounds and rough areas of skin were blended with purple to the bone. The eyes were done with red, then orange, then yellow. I used a couple different types of pupils, ranging from human, cat, reptile, and goat. The eyes also appear on Loren (the centaur).

I’m sure to return to more Mythos in the future.

Mythos: Custos Crypta

Posted in Miniatures with tags , , , , on May 24, 2020 by Sean

As break from various projects, I’ve been working on a couple faction boxes from Mythos, a Lovecraft inspired skirmish game. The first faction completed was the Custos Crypta, the Egyptian-themed faction. This is an army of giant bugs and their human thralls, and I’m all for it.

The first pic is the complete starter box. All the factions see to start with 5-6 models, so quick to paint up. There is a good variety of models despite the narrow theme of scarab beetles.

The human thralls, Sara Heriot (left) and Victoria Taylor (right) were painted in standard Egyptian clothing, white dresses with blue lining and extra bling in the form of armlets, bracelets, and Victoria’s golden headdress. They both have the typical squared-off haircut, but I have an idea that they’re just wearing wigs, like the real Egyptians did.

They both got makeup (the Eye of Horus being an obvious design). I gave them both blank white eyes to show how they are in thrall to the Khepera, the scarab god.

Next up are some the weaker bug minions. The Crypt Sham is a stealth assassin type, which I’m sure owes quite a bit to the movie Mimic. It can walk like a human and even has a human ‘face’ on the front of its head, though you can see the eyes and mandibles quite well.

The Crypt Grubs are the immature members of the swarm. I painted their armored parts the same as the exoskeletons of the other bugs, but painted the soft larval bodies a sickly yellow. This yellow repeats in the big bugs in the visible tissue between their joints.

Last up is the Crypt Guardian, the heavy hitter for the faction box. It is quite big and physically impressive, especially compared to the willowy humans and the Sham. I like the deathmask it carries in front of its face.

For all the scarabs, I painted their exoskeletons as follows: Prime black. Base coat with P3 Coal Black (really a very dark blue). Wash with Nuln Oil, followed by Druchii Violet. Highlight with Coal Black/White, in increasing ratios as I highlight, until the last highlights are almost all white. The domed thorax armor plate was then washed with Drakenhof Nightshade and Druchii Violet, followed by a layer of gloss varnish. I wanted them to really gleam.

The wings were done with a layer of Pig Iron, followed by Nuln Oil and Druchii Violet, followed by a highlight of silver. I figured that would be a good way to show their iridescence.

Next up are the Wildborne.
