I’ve evolved my decoration methods over the course of the army, and I might return to previous painted units to spruce them up, especially with the glowing gem effects.
This is Lord Arcanist Ossyan, the first caster I’ve done for my client’s Retribution of Scyrah army for Warmachine.
The model is totally covered in gems, and on first pass the black armor and pink gems looked a bit odd. The contrast was too great, and made the armor look like it had a rash…
So I aimed for a glow from the gems, following the edges of the grooves and edges of the armor. This turned out better, and gives the dark model more dynamism. More casters to come.

The color scheme is really coming together, and the army looks good on the table.

The snow on the bases is a nice contrast to the dark scheme. Grass would stand out to much.
Here are a few units, House Shyeel Battle Mages and Stormfall Archers, from a client’s Retribution of Scyrah army for Warmachine. The unit leader for the Mages was my test model for the army’s color scheme, shown in a previous post.
The color scheme is working out nicely. The very limited palette, black armor and random gear, white bags and decoration, blue for any cloth, and fiery pink for details like magic effects and glowy stuff, is very striking on the table. I’m looking forward to what the whole army will look like.
It should be noted that these aren’t the ‘standard’ level of paint job I do for clients, but a slightly discounted version, lacking only finer details and additional levels of shading/highlighting.

We worked out an original color scheme for the Retribution, different from the usual white and pale blue. Instead the army color is black for armor, blue for cloth, white for bags and sheaths, and pink for glowing magic effects. It came out to be somewhat anime, circa 1995, but works. The Dwarves, on the other hand, are more traditional, with armor and fatigues close to WWI-era uniforms.
They were approved, so more to follow.
